The Significance of a Prolonged PR Interval

چکیده

The PR interval represents the time from the beginning of the P wave (atrial excitation) to the beginning of the QRS complex (ventricular excitation). Taking an average PR interval of 0.16 sec., let us dissect it into its component parts. The impulse from the SA node spreads down the three atrial specialized tracts and through the atrial myocardium to reach the AV node. The atrial myocardial excitation generates the P wave and this lasts 0.08 sec. There is a delay in the AV node itself, taking up another 0.04 sec., and then the excitation enters the common bundle of His. Thus the P-H interval (P to His bundle) takes up 0.12 sec. The procession down the intraventricular pathways is divided further; from His bundle to the right or left bundle branch takes 0.02 sec., and from each of these bundles to the right and left ventricles takes another 0.02 sec. before the QRS complex begins to form. Thus the H-QRS, or second part of the PR interval, comprises 0.04 sec. The P-H plus H-QRS embrace the full PR interval of 0.16 sec.

Electrocardiogram PR Interval Is a Surrogate Marker to Predict New Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Frequent Premature Atrial Contractions.

The clinical significance of prolonged PR interval has not been evaluated in patients with frequent premature atrial contractions (PACs). We investigated whether prolonged PR interval could predict new occurrence of atrial fibrillation (AF) in patients with frequent PACs. We retrospectively analyzed 684 patients with frequent PACs (> 100 PACs/day) who performed repeated 24-hour Holter monitorin...

Prognostic significance of prolonged PR interval in the general population.

AIMS Prolonged PR interval, or first degree AV block, has been traditionally regarded as a benign electrocardiographic finding in healthy individuals, until recent studies have suggested that it may be associated with increased mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to further elucidate clinical and prognostic importance of prolonged PR interval in a large middle-aged population wit...

Prolonged PR interval and coronary artery disease.

Of 2744 patients seen in clinic practice, 37 were found to have a prolonged PR interval. The causes of prolongation of the PR interval were: congenital heart disease, 6; chronic rheumatic heart disease, 2; digitalis induced, 4; miscellaneous, 5; and coronary heart disease, 20. Of the 20 associated with coronary heart disease, 8 (2I.6% of all the patients with prolonged PR interval) had myocardi...

Electrical PR Interval Variation Predicts New Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients With Frequent Premature Atrial Contractions

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and fluctuation of autonomic tone is more prominent in patients with AF. As autonomic tone affects the heart rate (HR), and there is an inverse relationship between HR and PR interval, PR interval variation could be greater in patients with AF than in those without AF. The purpose of this study was to investigate th...

Role of PR-Interval In Predicting the Occurrence of Atrial Fibrillation.

The identification of individuals at high risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF) is important to prevent potentially lethal and invalidating complications of this arrhythmia. Recently, several studies have investigated the association between PR-interval and the risk of AF and have tested the value of PR-interval in personalized risk scores for AF. However, the results of these studies are...
